Progress During January 2009

  • Anna brushing the boards down with releasing agent so that they don't stick to the concrete.
  • The concrete was site mixed and poured from the lowest step upwards. An average of one step every half hour gave lower steps time to start going off but were still wet enough to be finished at the end.
  • The concrete chute.
  • The view from above.
  • Just like porridge before the concrete is compacted (vibrated). The vibrator turns the concrete into a fluid so that air escapes and it fills the shape made by the shuttering.
  • It went a lot more smoothly then I was expecting.
  • The weather was cold enough to damage uncured concrete so I built a tent around the stairs.
  • After three days I removed the shuttering and behold - a spiral concrete staircase!
  • The up and over door has been removed and replaced with a second wooden hoarding. This was done so that acrow props can be placed under the RSJ which was above the up and over garage door.
  • Cantilevered props being cut in the middle of the upstairs space. The joist angles are the same as the end of the building where these will be placed.
  • A couple of days after the pour, Anna was the first person to stand on the concrete steps.
